Valentines for the Soul: May I Have This Dance?

“The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Some of the best times of my life have been celebrations—wedding receptions, birthday parties, and anniversaries. Joining together with family and friends to commemorate a milestone with lots of music, dancing, and laughter. How I have enjoyed kicking up my heals on the dance floor, spinning freely to an upbeat song, singing out the lyrics as I went!

Did you know that God likes to dance too? Did you know that He dances over you?

Zephaniah 3:17 says that God rejoices over us with singing. According to OpentheWord.org, the Hebrew word, ‘rejoice,’ means to “spin around under violent emotion.” The phrase “rejoice over you” literally means to “dance, skip, leap, and spin in joy.” So, the latter part of this verse is translated, “He will dance over you with singing.”

This same verse refers to God as the Mighty One who saves. God has brought salvation to all mankind through the sacrifice of Jesus. Accepting Jesus as Savior is certainly cause for celebration. When one of us makes a decision for Christ, I imagine God kicking up His heals in heaven, spinning around with outstretched arms and shouts of joy.

Because of Jesus, we have peace with God. His love quiets our heart. We are no longer bound by sin and darkness. We live in freedom. Hallelujah! It’s time for us too to shout and sing and spin for joy!

God delights in you. He rejoices over you. He is waiting with outstretched arms, “May I have this dance?”

Won’t you join Him on the floor?

Dear God, thank You for my salvation, the greatest cause for celebration. I can’t wait to dance with You at the most wonderful wedding reception ever, the Marriage Supper of the Lamb!
